What the Scriptures say about Elders:
ACTS 14:23 – Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they put their trust. (NIV)
1 TIMOTHY 3:15 – Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of the church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgement as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. (NIV)

The Missions vision here at SVBC is to glorify God through a growing family of “World Christians” who are committed to multiplying disciples through a balanced ministry of local (Scott Valley) and world outreach. We will use all our human and material resources to “go, give and pray” in contemporary, creative, credible and caring ways to make Christ known to all peoples, consistently increasing the percentage of our resources devoted to world outreach.
SVBC supports fourteen missionary families who are involved in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ all over the world. Their assignments range from Bible translation, to church planting, to counseling of other missionaries, teaching church leaders, strengthening families, and mobilizing Christians of many lands to carry the message of Jesus to other unreached or underserved peoples. The missions budget of SVBC hovers around $60,000 dollars annually, representing a healthy “tithe” of our church’s income. A portion of these funds go to short-term mission projects, for example, trips our young people take to engage in summer cross-cultural ministry. Because many of our missionaries work in countries or among peoples where security is an issue, they wish us to limit what we share electronically. However, our church has a current directory in non-electronic form available to our members. Also, we report regularly on specific prayer requests and ministry objectives through the “Missions Minute” on Sunday mornings, as well as via the bulletin board in the foyer, and monthly bulletin inserts.
The SVBC Missions Team charged with interviewing, communicating with, holding accountable, encouraging, and conveying the needs of our missionaries to the Elder Board are: Bill and Suzie Birch, Mike and Lynne Bryan, Gloria Goeckermann, Susan Houg, Chris and Emi Loogman, Marica Lloyd, Megan Williams.
FINANCIAL & BUDGET COMMITTEE: In faith and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our Financial & Budget Committee monitors all aspects of the financial health of SVBC. The members include: Andrea Miller (Treasurer), Rhonda Muse, and Lillian Eastlick.
