John the Baptist

It seems very strange that John the Baptist should wonder if Jesus is the Messiah. In Luke 3, John said, “I baptize with water but  He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Luke 3:16) John baptized Jesus and saw the Holy Spirit come upon him in bodily form like a dove. (Luke 3:22) But now John is in prison wondering who Jesus is. (Matt. 11:3) Bible commentators believe John was going through a season of discouragement as he sat in prison. In times of difficulty it is often harder to believe. After all, in Luke 4:18 Jesus talked about “freedom for prisoners”. No doubt John was thinking, “what about setting me free?”. Unfortunately, Jesus didn’t get John out of prison. Later Herod put John to death. John is an important person in the  landscape of God’s redemptive economy. The old Covenant is ending and Jesus is about to institute the New Covenant in His own blood. Come out to church on Sunday. NOTE: the service begins at 9 am on this “Rodeo Sunday”. Enjoy the Rodeo Parade in downtown Etna at 10:30.

God Bless You
