“Faith”

As we continue our Living Right series through Ephesians 6, we come to the powerful image of the shield of faith. Each piece of the armor of God reminds us that living right in a world filled with spiritual battles requires strength, intentionality, and unwavering trust in the Lord. Faith is not just a concept we talk about—it’s a shield we carry, one that protects and empowers us to stand firm when life presses in.

In Ephesians 6:16, Paul writes, “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

Faith is not a passive belief—it’s an active defense. The Roman soldier’s shield wasn’t small or decorative; it was large enough to cover the whole body. Constructed of laminated wood and covered with layers of canvas and animal hide, it was soaked in water before battle so it could deflect and extinguish the flaming arrows launched by the enemy. In the same way, our faith in God’s promises guards and protects us when life’s attacks come our way.

Faith is rooted in what God has said, not in what we see. When the enemy launches arrows of doubt, fear, or discouragement, our faith stands firm on the truth of God’s Word. It reminds us that no matter the fire, God’s promises still hold true, and His power is sufficient to sustain us.

Faith also unites us. Roman soldiers often locked their shields together, forming an unbreakable wall of defense. Likewise, as believers, our faith grows stronger when we stand side by side—encouraging one another, lifting each other up, and holding the line together.

When the heat of battle rises, lift your shield high. Trust in the One who fights for you. The arrows may come, but through faith, they will never overcome.

This week, take time to examine what you’re trusting in. Are you holding your shield of faith high, or have you let it drop under the weight of worry or doubt? Spend a few moments in prayer, asking God to strengthen your faith and remind you of His promises. Then, stand firm—because faith in Him will always be enough.

With Grace and Love,

Pastor Brant
