Our 47th president was sworn into office January 20. The official presidential vows are:
“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Those are solemn words, and a solemn commitment. We as Christians, and citizens of the United States, also have a responsibility regarding our president, and all of our leaders. Our command, through the Apostle Paul, is:
“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1–4)
As we pray for our new president as he fulfills his vows, may we also fulfill our responsibility to continually bring our leaders before our Lord.
