“The Brevity of Life”

A couple of weeks ago I shared Jeremiah 17:5-8 as an example of life with Christ and life without him. If you have a chance, check those verses out. I have been going through Psalms and a lot of the time one chapter in particular will stand out. Reading Psalm 90, I was struck with the brevity of life. Vs.3-6.10,12. This chapter was written by Moses, so it is the oldest chapter in Psalms. He certainly understood the trials and tribulations of spending 40 years with the stiff-necked Jewish nation heading to the Promised  Land.

Verses 3-6: You turn people back to dust., saying” Return to dust, you mortals”. For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning, but by evening it is dry and withered. Verse 10: Seventy years are given to us (3 score and 10) some even live to eighty, but even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear and we fly away. Verse 12: Teach us to realize the brevity of life so that we may grow in wisdom. I like the part that says: “We fly away”. For years I was privileged to host a Bible  study for 10-12 guys every Thursday at our house. Our  nickname was the “Bible Boys”. After prayer, we would all repeat: “Only one life will so be passed, only what’s done for Christ will last”. We know nothing about the next minute, hour, day or beyond, however we do know the God who gives us every breath and heartbeat. To Him do we praise and worship.

Don’t miss John Wetzig this Sunday…………good stuff.

See you there. dm
