“Lost Sheep, Coins and Sons”

This Sunday we will be in Luke 15.  Jesus tells three parables in this chapter.  In each parable something was lost.  There was a lost sheep. There was a lost coin.  There was a lost son that being what is commonly known as “the prodigal son”.  Jesus shines a light on the attitude of the Pharisees who had an indifferent and even hostile attitude about lost sinners.  My wife and I went to a movie this week.  We had the opportunity to see “The Blind”. The title doesn’t refer to a person who can’t see but rather a duck blind.  Those who hunt ducks often sit in camouflaged shelters so they can’t be spotted by incoming waterfowl. The movie was about Phil Robertson of “Duck Dynasty” fame.  “Duck Dynasty” was a reality television show that ran for several years about the Robertson family.  The Robertson’s love to hunt, fish and make duck calls. They could safely be called, “Red Necks”. Louisiana is their home.  The family has made a fortune making duck calls.  They don’t have a lot of polish, prestige or fancy clothes but they sure are funny. They didn’t start out that way. Phil Robertson started out with nothing in the Louisiana backwoods.  His father was often gone on off shore oil rigs.   His mother had some mental health challenges and was hospitalized at times.  Phil later fell in love with his sweetheart, “Miss Kay”. The movie chronicles the story of Phil’s spiral into alcohol and abusive behavior.  When his family has left him a local pastor shares the Gospel and Phil gets saved.  The story is heartbreaking yet redemptive in the end.  Phil Robertson was lost.  Jesus saved him from a destructive life.  Today Phil proclaims the Gospel wherever he goes. The God we serve pursues lost people and has given us the same mandate. Heaven rejoices when a sinner comes home.

God Bless You
