“Slip Slidin’ Away”

Those of us of a certain ‘vintage’ may remember these lyrics of a song by Paul Simon:
“Slip slidin’ away, Slip slidin’ away, You know the nearer your destination, The more you’re slip slidin’ away.”  The thought he was seeking to portray was that the nearer one gets to their destination, the easier it is to let your goal slip away.
I have seen that lived out in life. Think physically, for example. When we were young, many of us sought to be in tip-top shape physically, Then as we aged, those concerns began to lose their importance. The aches and pains of exercise began to loom larger and larger, until we lost the motivation we once had.
Spiritually that can happen as well. I think that’s why Paul and Peter remind us to not let our walk with God ‘slip-slide’ away.
2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
2 Peter 3:14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,
Be diligent! Do something with intense effort. Physically, we ought do that, of course. But spiritually, that is even more important. Faithfully apply ourselves to living the life Jesus saved us and called us to.
For the believer, there really is no excuse to let things just ‘slip-slide’ away.
