“Participating In The Divine Nature”

Last week we looked at “incarnation”.  Jesus is the “Word made flesh” as John describes in 1:14 of his Gospel.  C.S.Lewis calls this the “Grand Miracle” of them all.  If Jesus isn’t fully God and fully man then we are still lost in our sins.  The incarnation is central and foundational to our Christian faith.  Incarnation has been the bedrock of Orthodoxy since 320AD.  At the Council of Nicea in 320 AD this truth of incarnation was hammered out by pastors and theologians.  This battle over truth was crucial because a man named Arius was teaching that “there was a time when Jesus was not”.  In other words, in the mind of Arius, Jesus wasn’t eternal,  he was a created, finite being.  Jesus is Emmanuel as we find in Isaiah 7 and 9.  Emmanuel means “God with us” as we sing every Christmas.  Therefore, Jesus is worthy of our worship, adoration and praise.  He came as a suffering servant at his first Advent.  He will come as a conquering King at his second Advent. Read Revelation 19 and see a description of his second Advent, or Second Coming as the prophecy teachers say.  So what does this mean for today?  If you have been “born again” and applied the redemptive, accomplished work of Calvary to your life by faith then the Holy Spirit has taken up residence inside of your life. In II Peter 1:4 we find a thought provoking phrase.  “participate in the divine nature”  In other words as followers of Jesus, with the Holy Spirit residing in us, we are personally engaged with the Holy Spirit.  We are participating in a personal relationship with the Father and the Son through the power of the Holy Spirit.  This is the practical daily application of Emmanuel, God with us.  We are in a personal relationship with the Triune God of the universe, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

God Bless You
