Every one of us had a father. Some fathers were great, loved us and provided for us and treated us with tender respect. Other fathers weren’t so great, and the memory of them might actually sting.
It is interesting that God has chosen to reveal Himself as “Father”. Jesus often called Him “My Father”. Jesus did have a unique relationship with God the Father, being the “only begotten Son”. That English phrase translates a Greek word that means “the only one with those genes”. So Jesus’ relationship with God the Father was special.
But God wants to be Father for us all. He created us, so in one sense He is our Father. He loves us with a deep passionate love.
But we are all naturally living estranged from the Father. In ourselves, we don’t seek a relationship with Him, and often view Him as a distant, uninterested, perhaps even cruel ‘father’. And that grieved His heart so much that He provided a means to bring us back into a relationship with Himself.
Colossians 1:20 tells us that God the Father, through Jesus His Son, reconciled all things to Himself. That doesn’t mean that all things have received that reconciliation. But God the Father has made reconciliation available for all, through His Son.
And God the Father urges every one of us to receive that reconciliation.
That will be the topic of the Father’s Day service this Sunday, June 15, in the Etna Johnson-Joss city park, provided by Scott Valley Berean Church. The service will be followed by a lunch provided by the church. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Come learn more about the love of our heavenly Father, demonstrated through His Son Jesus.
