We just celebrated the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. There are so many thoughts that flow from the events of the Passion story.
But one that continues to stand out in my mind is the record of Jesus’ mother, Mary. John the apostle recorded the conversation Jesus had with Mary, even while hanging on the cross.
In the midst of His suffering, Jesus looked down and saw His mother, standing near John. “Woman,” He said, “Behold your son.” And then to John He said, “Behold your mother.”
Mary’s impact on Jesus’ life and ministry was very important. Not only giving birth to the Son of God, but at various times in His ministry she encouraged Him, and it seems even pushed Him to begin His ministry. At the wedding in Cana of Galilee, Mary was the one that brought the news of the lack of wine, and encouraged Jesus to do something about it. Numerous other times Mary plays a significant role in Jesus’ work.
Now, at the climax, Jesus honored His mother, and made certain she would be cared for. This is a great example for us all.
I thank God for my mother, for the mother of my children, and for all the women that minister in our congregation. God bless you, each one!
