I love getting acquainted with new friends, especially friends that have a heart and passion that runs parallel to mine. There is an immediate sense of unity, of companionship, of understanding.
I also love seeing “my world” through their eyes. Things that have become common place for me take on a new, fresh perspective when they express interest and delight in them. Their appreciation for things I have become used to reinvigorates my own awareness.
This weekend the regular attendees of Scott Valley Berean Church have the opportunity for our hearts to be renewed as we host Pastor Brant Smith and his family. Brant, his wife Meredith and their children Madelyn and Adin will be with us. Brant is currently an Assistant Pastor for groups and college/young adults at Adventure Church, an Evangelical Free Church in Yuba City, CA. The Search Committee and the Elders have both reviewed Brant’s history and experience in ministry, and are recommending him to the congregation to be considered as our next pastor. Pastor Brant will share the Word of God with us during the worship service at 10am. That will be followed with an opportunity to get better acquainted with him and his family during a Q&A time.
May I suggest some things to consider as we spend this time with Brant and his family?
- Do they love the Lord?
- Does he love his wife & children? Do they love and respect him?
- Does he love God’s church? Does he love to teach the Word of God?
- Will they fit with our congregation and community?
If those things are true, then the question becomes “Would God want this family to be part of our congregation? Is this the man the Lord has selected to be our next pastor?” And then, “Will I support him in prayer, with my finances, and with my time?”
We have been praying, and continue to pray, for God’s direction for Scott Valley Berean Church, and for the Smiths. We will soon have a congregational meeting to enable the congregation to register their opinion on this very important decision. We are trusting the Lord to lead us all in this decision.
And I hope our hearts are renewed as we make these new friends.
