“The Purpose of the Church”

It is good, every now and again, to review the purpose of the church. Why do we meet? What is our ultimate goal?

We are not a social club, although we do enjoy socializing. We are not a self-help organization. We are not a fortress for hiding from the attacks of the enemy.

We are a training institution. The church exists to equip people for works of service. (Ephesians 4) We study the Word of God, the Scriptures breathed out by our Father, so that we will be adequate, equipped for ever good work. (2 Timothy 3)

I was reminded of that when studying Colossians 1. Paul exalted Jesus Christ with a beautiful hymn of praise. And then he concluded the chapter with this verse. “We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28)

That is our goal. That is why we meet to study the Scriptures, to sing praises, to encourage each other. That is why we fellowship with other believers. We proclaim Jesus! We use every tool in our toolbox to help each other become mature, complete, “perfect”, in Him.

I am encouraged by seeing a church working together to fulfill that purpose. We’re not there yet, but we continue to proclaim Jesus toward that goal.

The sermon this week will be given by Andy Warken – Colossians 2:1-7
