This Sunday we will be looking at two narratives in Luke’s Gospel. We will focus on Luke 22:54-71. In this section three scenes unfold. The first is focused on Peter and his three denials of Jesus. The second is guards mocking and beating Jesus after his arrest. The third is the religious leaders who question Jesus. The religious leaders are questioning Jesus about his claims to have a special relationship with the Father. It really comes down to a question of identity. Who is Jesus? Is he a religious quack or is he for real? This question has been debated by the crowds all throughout the Gospels. Peter’s denial is the lowest moment in his spiritual journey. “Jesus looked straight at Peter and Peter remembered what Jesus had said. He went out and wept bitterly.” It was a tragic moment for Peter. Yet, in Acts we see Peter restored and filled with courage due to the infilling of the Holy Spirit. An amazing transformation has taken place. Moments of failure can launch us into transformation when we experience repentance and a new dependence upon God.
